It's such a big question and dilemma and I love he thoughtful way you are bringing it forward. What new traditions are possible? How might we do this in a New Earth kind of way?
We have also stopped putting up a tree of any kind. It started a few years ago when I felt disconnected from our recycled fake tree. Then in the last few years I’ve just hung ornaments all around my house where my cats can’t get them! I haven’t had a real tree in over 25 years as I never felt right about cutting a live barely-even-a-teenager Life Force down for the brief point in time we get to enjoy it. But boy do I miss that smell!! It brings back so many memories. I love the idea of essential oils. Just need to make sure they are pet-friendly as animals can aspirate and cause harm to their lungs if not!

I wonder if you are learning anything about all of the spraying of chemicals we, and our poor forests and farmlands, are enduring? That strikes me as a huge cause of fires and disease for us, wildlife, and our pets…
