OMFG I so feel you on this....each time I've had the privilege of purchasing a new appliance it has been such a frustrating experience. And the thought of my current washing machine winding up in the landfill because it's motherboard went awry (it now informs my hubby when I finish a load of laundry!) makes me want to scream. Also so good on your for actually hand washing - that's impressive.

Awesome article Tam! Can relate as our water heater that is 6 years old is starting to complain and may need replacing. In times past a washing machine could be relied upon to last for up to 20 years. A water heater was good for 10-12 years. It felt good to be able to "rely" on this built in integrity. You have made it very clear that this is becoming a distant memory. The question you have seeded and left us with is "what can we do to offset this surge of planned obsolescence"? As consumers we are very powerful when united.
